10th Nani Palkhivala Memorial National Tax Moot Court Competition, 2013

The All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) and the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Bar Association in association with the Moot Court Association of Government Law College is pleased to announce the 10th Nani Palkhivala Memorial National Tax Moot Court Competition to be held from 3rd – 5th October, 2013.

The All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) is the apex body of tax associations & practitioners in India and was formed in the year 1976 in the presence of Mr. Nani Palkhivala and Justice J. C. Shah, Former Chief Justice of India. The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Bar Association is an association of professionals, who regularly appear before the ITAT. Mr. Nani Palkhivala was the President of ITAT Bar Association from 1968 to 2002. He was a legend in the field of Income Tax and Constitutional Law and a former Professor at the Government Law College for a number of years. He strived to further the cause of education and this moot court competition promises to be a fitting tribute to his legacy.

With a heritage spanning a century and a half, the Government Law College, Mumbai has dominated the legal landscape of India since its inception in 1855. This esteemed institution enjoys the distinction of being one of Asia’s oldest Law Colleges. Generations of distinguished legal luminaries who have been nurtured by this unique institution, have made a seminal contribution to the evolution of the Indian legal System. The College has consistently maintained high standards of education by emphasizing on the crucial balance between academics and extra-curricular activities.

This competition has the distinction of being India’s first moot court competition based exclusively on the subject of Taxation. The Rounds of the competition will be held at the ITAT Courtrooms itself and will be judged by the Hon’ble Members and Professionals of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. The Final Rounds of the competition will be judged by a Full Bench of sitting Judges of the Hon’ble Bombay High Court.

We cordially invite your college to participate in the Moot Court Competition. Please find enclosed, a copy of the Case Study and the Rules governing the competition.

In addition to the trophies and cash awards mentioned in the Rules, the winners of the Best Team, Best Speaker & 2nd Best Speaker Awards will be given an opportunity to intern with leading tax law firms in India and prominent senior counsels of the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India, specialising in taxation practice. The winners will also be given membership of the AIFTP and a two year subscription to the journal of the AIFTP.

Accommodation will be provided to the participants for the duration the days of the Competition. A Registration Fee of Rs. 1000/- is payable at the time of Registration (details attached with the Rules).  Kindly confirm participation for the same on or before 5th September, 2013. Limited number of Registrations will be accepted on a first cum first serve basis.
